Why this matters
A worksheet is only useful if its answer key is right. One wrong answer can convince a student that a correct method is wrong, and a parent or teacher marking a stack of pages rarely has time to re-solve every problem. MathGem generates a new set of problems every time someone presses Generate, so its answers cannot be checked by hand once and then trusted forever. Instead, the checking is built into how the problems are made and into how the site is updated.
Problems are built from their answers
Most generators start from the answer and work backwards, which guarantees that every problem has a clean, correct solution:
- Quadratic equations. The generator first picks two whole-number solutions, for example 4 and , then multiplies to get the equation . The equation always factors, and the answer key already knows both solutions.
- Systems of equations. The values of and are chosen first, then the coefficients, and the right-hand sides are calculated from them. Pairs of lines that are parallel or identical are thrown away, so every system has exactly one solution.
- Division with integers or decimals. The quotient and the divisor are chosen first and multiplied to make the dividend, so the division always comes out even.
- Percentages. Percents and totals are taken from lists of friendly values, and only combinations that give a whole-number answer are used.
Where a problem is generated forwards instead, such as the order of operations, the answer is calculated by the same code that wrote the problem, and problems whose answer would not be a whole number are skipped.
Answers in one consistent form
A correct answer can still confuse if it is written oddly. The answer keys follow fixed rules: fractions are in lowest terms, a whole number is never written as a fraction such as , square roots are fully simplified, factoring answers are completely factored, and when an equation has two solutions the smaller one comes first.
Every topic is tested before each update
Each of the 26 topics has its own automatic test. Before any change to the site goes live, the tests run, and if a single check fails, the update stops. The tests check three things:
- The worked examples. Every example on the topic page, including the "common mistakes", is recalculated: the solutions are substituted back into the equation, expanded answers are compared with the original expression, and so on.
- Thousands of generated problems. For each topic, the test generates thousands of problems at every difficulty level and checks each answer a second, independent way. For example, factoring answers are multiplied back out and compared with the original expression at several values of .
- The sample problems on the page. The sample problems shown on each topic page are generated with a fixed seed, so the test checks exactly the problems visitors see. Samples that repeat a worked example are skipped, so the page always shows something new.
What the checks have caught
The tests are not a formality. When they were first added in 2026, they found problems in the older generators that had gone unnoticed, all of which have since been fixed:
- A few systems of equations were two versions of the same line, such as and , which have infinitely many solutions even though the answer key listed one.
- Some factoring answers were correct but not completely factored, for example instead of .
- Some answers printed a whole number as a fraction, such as .
- Subtraction worksheets with two numbers of the same length could produce negative answers that young students were not expecting.
Each of these now has its own check, so the same mistake cannot come back unnoticed.
What this means when you print a worksheet
- You can mark from the answer sheet with confidence. Match the Set ID on the worksheet with the one on the answer sheet.
- The explanations and worked examples on each topic page follow the same rules as the worksheets, so the method a student reads is the method the answer key expects.
- If something still looks wrong, please report it with the page address, the settings and the Set ID. Every report is answered, and a confirmed error gets a fix and a new check.
