About MathGem
Free, printable math worksheets since 2017
MathGem is a free website for making printable math worksheets, from first-grade addition to Pre-Calculus. Pick a topic and a difficulty, press Generate, and print a fresh worksheet with a matching answer key. There is no account, sign-up or payment.
Who it's for
MathGem is made for parents and teachers: parents supporting homeschool or after-school practice, and teachers preparing classroom handouts, homework or review sheets. Students use the printed worksheets, usually with an adult choosing the level and checking the answers.
Who makes MathGem
I'm Thomas Lee, and I build and run MathGem on my own; it is a personal project, not a company. I live in British Columbia, Canada.
My background is a mix of science and computing. I studied Molecular Biology and History as an undergraduate, then completed a master's degree and a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering. After working as a postdoctoral fellow and then as a university researcher for several years, I moved to the software industry, where I work as a tech lead.
My two children built their math foundations on an early version of MathGem, solving about 100 problems a day, starting with the four operations. That experience shapes how the site is organised: plenty of fresh practice for the basics, and explanations for the concepts that come after them.
How MathGem has grown
MathGem started in 2017 as a simple Basic Math worksheet generator. Division, negative numbers and row spacing controls followed in 2019. In 2026 the site was rebuilt from scratch in TypeScript and grew to six levels, from Basic Math to Pre-Calculus, with an explanation page for every topic and practice guides for parents and teachers. The release notes list the changes in detail.
How the worksheets are made and checked
Every worksheet is generated in your browser from random values within the settings you choose, so no two worksheets are exactly alike. The answer key is computed by the same code that makes the problems.
The explanation pages are checked too: every worked example, and a large sample of generated problems for each topic, is verified by automated tests before the site is updated. When those checks find a problem in a generator, it is fixed before the page goes live. If you still spot a mistake, please let me know.
Why it is free
MathGem is free to use. To help cover the cost of running and improving the site, it may show advertising. Ads are never part of the printed worksheets.
